What to Wear (And What Not to) When Inside the Gym

A gym is more than just a place to enhance your fitness. People from all walks of life go to the gym, making it a perfect place to expand your network socially and professionally. However, like all other public places, it has a code of etiquette that makes the gym-going experience agreeable to all types of people. An important part of this unspoken list of rules is the use of appropriate bodybuilding clothing and other gym essentials:

Wearing of Moisture-Wicking Clothes

One of the worst mistakes you can make in the gym is using the equipment and leaving a pool of your sweat on it for others to soak in. While keeping a towel at hand is helpful, it is better if you wear moisture-wicking clothes.

Moisture-wicking clothes are typically made of polyester and Lycra blends designed to keep your body cool by drawing sweat away from your skin and towards the outer surface. Once moisture is diverted to the surface, the material facilitates the quick drying of sweat.

Aside from its moisture-wicking capability, this bodybuilding clothing is light and comfortable, which are desired properties for any type of workout. As a result, it enhances your performance during the session and gives you the best result.

Wear Proper Footwear

You should not wear flip flops or open-toed sandals at the gym. Wearing this type of footwear during a workout will only invite disaster. It is difficult to gain a stable footing while wearing such unsteady footwear. You could slip while carrying weights and end up hurting yourself or others.

Outside of the locker room, you should never wear flip flops. Training shoes or even runners are acceptable. These types of footwear offer ample cushioning, lateral support, and flexibility, which are all needed for the level of activity expected inside the gym.

Bring the Essentials

Wearing bodybuilding clothing with moisture-wicking characteristics will go a long way in managing your sweat. Still, it would be better to have a towel at hand, ready to wipe each bench or equipment that you use.

Also, make sure that all the gym essentials are in your bag. Most gyms have drinking water available, but it is safer to bring your own water bottle. It would also be a good idea to bring a lock to secure your belongings as you work out. Other accessories such as weight training gloves, heart rate monitor, or flip-flops for the shower would come in handy.

Do Not Wear Jewelry

Jewelry is good for wearing at the office or during dinner, but it does not belong at the gym. Not only is it unnecessary, but it is actually unsafe. Necklaces and bracelets could get caught on moving or rotating equipment, damaging it and causing an accident at the same time.

Even if you manage to avoid accidents, the vigorous nature of gym activities can scratch or damage your jewelry. Sweat can also react with the metal parts, corroding the surfaces. To avoid this, make sure you take off all pieces of jewelry before you enter the gym.

Don’t Wear Cologne Inside the Gym

Preference or even tolerance for fragrances differ widely from one person to another. That is why it is better to avoid spraying on perfume or cologne before going to the gym. This is worth mentioning, especially since gym-goers tend to breathe deeply when working out, and the presence of strong fragrances can be disruptive and even irritating.
