What to do if the iPhone screen is black

If your iPhone has a black screen, one of the first things to do is to restart the device. If it doesn’t work, you can switch to full recovery.

It may happen that the iPhone runs into some problems which, at first glance, can be difficult to solve. The most common are the following: the iPhone has a black screen and does not turn on; the device has a black screen but works, receives notifications and system sounds are heard; the iPhone turns on but remains locked during the boot process.

If the screen of your smartphone also seems dead, do not immediately think that there is damage to the display and, before taking it to repair, perform one of the following procedures. The solution could really be very simple and you would avoid paying a boat of money for useless repair.

How to repair an iPhone with a black screen but that works

If your iPhone has a black screen but is turned on, the reason for this defect, as we have anticipated, could be really trivial. Often this problem could be caused by a so-called ” freeze ” of the operating system. This freezing could in turn be caused by one of these reasons:

  • There is not enough space on the device;
  • The software update was not successful;
  • Too many applications are running at the same time;
  • There has been a malware attack.

Although this situation may appear to be serious, given that the use of the iPhone has become practically impossible, sometimes just simply restarting it to completely solve the problem. However, the procedure for rebooting is different depending on the iPhone model you own.

Restarting the screen for iPhone 4, 5 and 6

All you have to do is press and hold the Home + Power buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears on the screen (typically it takes about 15/20 seconds). At this point, the iPhone restarts and the display returns to work as before.

Restarting the display for iPhone 7 and later

No longer having a Home button to press, as it has become touch and is therefore integrated into the display, to restart the screen of an iPhone 7, it is necessary to carry out a different key combination than the previous models.

If you are an owner of this iPhone model (or the newer models), you must simultaneously hold down the Volume Down + Power keys until the Apple logo appears. After the operation, the smartphone will no longer have a black screen.

How to fix an iPhone with a black screen and that won’t turn on

If suddenly your iPhone has a black screen and does not want to turn on and work, perhaps getting stuck during startup, the problem may be more complex than in the previous case. In this situation, the procedure for rebooting is a bit more complicated, but it is usually decisive.

Here’s what you need to do: connect iPhone to PC or Mac; start iTunes (if you have not installed it, you can download it for free from the Apple website ); while the device is connected and has been detected by iTunes, carry out the steps that we describe below relating to the model you own.

  • iPhone 6s or earlier (iPhone 4, 4s, 5, 5s): press and hold the Home button and the Power button simultaneously. Keep holding them until you see the recovery mode screen;
  • iPhone 7: Press and hold the Power button and the Volume down button simultaneously. Keep them pressed until you see the recovery mode screen;
  • iPhone 8 or later: quickly press and release the Volume Up key. Press and quickly release the Volume Down key. Next, hold down the side button until you see the recovery-mode screen.

At this point, you will see a message from iTunes informing you that your smartphone is in recovery mode. From the iTunes screen, click on the Restore iPhone button and wait for the procedure to be completed. At the end of the restore, your smartphone is as if it were completely new.

This procedure led to the formatting of the iPhone. So, if you don’t have a backup copy, you will no longer be able to recover all the content on your smartphone. However, if you want your iPhone with a black screen and that does not turn on to work as before, you must necessarily do this.

Repair iPhone black screen with third party app

Have you done the procedure with iTunes and failed or is it too complicated? You can opt for very simple and immediate third-party applications. Among these, the best in our opinion is Dr. Fone Ripair.

After installing the application on Windows or Mac, just connect the smartphone and Dr. Fone will recognize it immediately. Once recognized, you need to press Start to start the repair process. Dr. Fone is also able to recover lost/deleted information or data. Recovery is direct from device memory or from iTunes or iCloud backup.
