Ritu Kumar – A well Known Fashion Designer
Ritu Kumar is a well known fashion designer and entrepreneur who is known for her natural fabrics and traditional weaving techniques. She is the queen of Indian Couture. She has 4 designer labels with over 90 stores across India.Her designs portray the rich tradition of Indian textiles. This year she completed 50 years in the industry.
She was born in Amritsar in 1944. Then she moved to Shimla for her education. She studied at Lady Irwin College where she met her husband Shashi Kumar. Then she accepted a scholarship by Briarcliff College in New York where she studied Art History. Then she returned to India and studied museology at the Ashutosh Museum of Indian Art, a part of University of Kolkata. She began her fashion business in Kolkata with two tables and hand-block printing. She started her business with making bridal wear and evening clothing in the years 1960 and 1970. Two decades later she expanded her business in international markets. Her shops are located in London, Paris and New York. The shop located in London was shut down after 3 years in 1999.
At that time her company’s turnover was the highest among all the Indian fashion outlets estimated around Rs.10 billion. In the year 2002 she launched the ‘Label’ line in partnership with her son Amish. This brand offers clothes for the younger segment at comparatively cheaper prices. In the year 2013 she was awarded the Padmashri by the Government of India for her exceptional contribution and performance in the field of fashion, textile and craftsmanship.
She is also the first Indian woman entrepreneur to get featured in the Harvard Business school’s study program to understand the emerging markets through the point of views of various successful business leaders across various domains. In 2018 she came up with another brand called Ri Ritu Kumar which offers modern heirlooms, bridal wear and occasion wear. Lately she has also launched her collection of home decor called Ritu Kumar Home where she has explored with Indian textiles, traditions and crafts. She launched 10 collections featuring tableware to bed sheets and decor pieces.
