Masaba Gupta – Breaking the Stereotypes!
There’s a certain sense of responsibility growing up as a child of famous parents. Masaba Gupta, now 31, is the daughter of West Indies Cricketer Viv Richards and Indian Actress Neena Gupta who struggled her teenage life trying to make an individual identity like her parents. An 8-year-old Masaba aspired to become a professional tennis player but dropped it while she was 16. Being very passionate about Music and Dance, she went ahead with the interest and moved to London for its studies, eventually returned back because of feeling homesick. Finally, at the age of 19, she discovered her talent in Fashion Designing and participated in Lakme Fashion Week under the guidance of an already established designer Wendell Rodricks. This was the turning point in her life, making her one of India’s top Designers today.
Masaba launched her clothing label in the year 2009, named after her first name itself. She named her first Couture at Lakme Fashion Week “Kattran” which meant miniature bits of fabrics. She managed to replicate both of her Indian and African ethnicity through her designs. She got noticed for her Bohemian printed designs. She valiantly blends the Indian traditional work with vibrant colorful prints. Her collection is mostly dedicated to Pret a porter style. Whether its bridal wear or casual wear her collection of designs is very impressive and unremarkable. Her designs are suitable for the women of the early ’20s to 50. She plays with some organic fabrics which makes her designs simple yet stylish, bohemian yet traditional. Her Strenght is usually sarees which are very practical and effortless with beautiful patterns, prints, and colors.
Her collection of Lakme Fashion Week 2014 called “Wanderess” was a huge hit where the famous Bollywood celebrity Shilpa Shetty was show-stopping in Masaba’s side cut gown with dupatta drape. This collection was acknowledged for its creative designs of thigh-high jackets, bell bottoms, fringe bordered skirts, chic crop tops, and printed sarees of vibrant colors with full sleeves pullover crop blouses.
Social Media plays a vital role in her career, unlike other designers, she claims that the majority of her sales are through Whatsapp. She is the first fashion designer who performed a fashion show on Instagram. In addition to her creativity, the support of many Bollywood celebrities like Rhea Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, and Neha Dhupia, helped her received a lot of love and success at a very young age giving close competition to some giants in the industry. Her recent collection was launched on 30th November 2019 in collaboration with Rhea Kapoor. In Levi’s campaign of redesigning their iconic jacket, Masaba was one of the designers out of many other celebrities collaborating with the brand.
It’s a very rare sight to witness an Indian designer giving a thought on the fashion of the minorities of the nation, and that’s what Masaba does, she has a personality of breaking stereotypes. She launched “Hijab-Saree” in 2018, targetting Muslim women who want to enjoy Indian high fashion which was quite appealing to the targetted audience which managed to win the hearts of the Muslims. There is yet a long way to go in achieving more milestones in her career but I’m sure with this speed Masaba Gupta’s name will be written in golden words in the history of Indian Fashion Designers.
