How Pilates Caves Beach Helped Me Breathe, Stretch, and Feel Alive Again

Have you ever had one of those weeks where your back feels like it’s been carrying the weight of the whole world? That was me. It happened because of working from home. No, I’m not blaming WFH, but my whole time was on a laptop, and that too in my bedroom.

My mom told me that I would soon mess with my posture, but I was too lazy to join a fitness club. Then one lazy Saturday, while scrolling (and pretending to look productive), I saw a post about this little coastal spot where people were doing workouts by the beach. That’s how I first came across Pilates Caves Beach. At that moment, I thought, “Well, it can’t hurt to try. Worst case, I’ll get some sunburn.”

So, I chucked a few things into a bag, grabbed my poor old mat that hadn’t seen daylight in months, and hit the road. No big plan. Just vibes. The second I stepped out of the car, I swear the ocean air slapped me awake—in the best way. It was nothing like a gym. The sound of waves crashing, kids yelling somewhere in the background, the smell of salt… it felt alive. By the time the class started, I already knew I wasn’t just here to “fix my back.” I was here to actually breathe.

A Class with a View

Now, don’t imagine some super-serious, tight-bunned instructor barking orders. This was different. It felt easy, almost playful. Stretch, breathe, and laugh when you wobble—it was that kind of session. And the best part? I caught myself breathing with the waves gradually—with the waves, I slowly learned to inhale as they rolled in and exhale as they rolled out. Trust me, it wasn’t the plan; it just happened naturally. Somewhere in between stretches, I thought, “Why don’t I do this more often?”

Afterwards, I wandered into the caves (because how could you not?).  They were cool, and little beams of light slipped through cracks like stage lights. I stood longer than I meant to; I just wanted to listen to the sound of the calming waves. And yes, that was the exact moment when Pilates Caves Beach went from being “just a class” to “okay, this is actually special.”

Not Fixed, But Better

Look, I won’t lie. My back did not heal overnight. As you know, Rome was not built in one day, so I cannot heal in one day. Of course, things take time. But since then, I have started noticing the little things—I started sitting straight while working on my laptop. Also, in between taking deep breaths. Small wins, but they add up.

Would I Go Back?

I have already told my mates, next time they’ve got no choice—they are coming along, whether they like it or not. I am not listening to any of their excuses. There’s just something about doing Pilates with the sound of waves that makes you forget it’s even exercise. It feels more like a cheeky little gift to yourself. And honestly, isn’t that the kind of fitness we all need? Something that doesn’t feel like work but like living.
