How Ayurveda Incorporate with Medical Science?

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian holistic science that deals with healing of the human body mind and spirit. It does so with the use of natural remedies, medicines, massages, potions, practices, treatments and such processes. Both Ayurveda as well as yoga originated sometime 5000 years ago and were started by great sages and saints of India. This makes both yoga as well as Ayurveda sister sciences that deal with healing of the human body mind and spirit for holistic wellness.

Ayurveda is a combination of 2 Sanskrit words; Ayur, meaning life and Veda meaning sciences. Ayurveda fairly translates to the science of life. It is the kind of science that aims on attaining positivity and the perfection of the balance of a body so that it can function in an optimal way. It generally deals with the inner processes of the body and the corrections of faulty processes inside the body with outward help and practices.

In the ancient Hindu history, there is a sacred scripture called the Veda. There are 4 main Vedas that are divided into sub categories and so on. The main 4 Vedas are the Rig Veda, Sam Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda. Yoga was a practice that became a part of the ancient Indian scripture called the Rig Veda. And Ayurveda became a part of the ancient Indian scripture called the Atharva Veda.

To understand how Ayurveda can be induced in the modern day and age, one has to first understand the ideals behind Ayurveda and how it is different from the modern medicinal practices.

Ayurveda is essentially one of the oldest medicinal practices known to man. But how does it still hold well in today’s age? The goal behind practicing Ayrveda is:

  • The connection of the forces of the universe with a living being.
  • The driving force of the life itself, the Doshas. The Doshas are known to be present in everybody in different aspects and ratios.
  • Also the constitutional aspects of a body, known as its Prakriti.

With these in focus, Ayurveda has a different understanding of the human body and mental composition. In Ayurveda it is believed that the body is composed of the following 5 elements: the water (jal), fire (agni), wind (vayu), ether (akash) and the earth (prithvi) elements that are readily found in nature. The elements are collectively also called the Panchmahabhutas. The presence of these elements inside us gives us the much needed evidence that we and our bodies are connected to nature itself and hence can be healed by nature single-handedly and hence Ayurveda was born.

Ayurveda is still very much prevalent in India people from all over the world head to experience Ayurvedic Massage courses in India and the Panchakarma treatment in India. There are many Ayurveda courses in Kerala for Ayurveda enthusiasts to learn from.

According to Ayurveda there are essentially 3 kinds of Body Types. Our bodies are constituted of the 5 main elements working together to create our spirit. These elements are present in each body but in different ratio. Some elements may be in a majority than the other element in a body where as another body may have a majority of another element.

These body types are known as Doshas. The three main Doshas are:

  • Pitta dosha:

This is the Dosha that represents the water and fire elements in a body. A person with an essential Pitta balance is usually powerfully intellectual, outspoken and good with making decisions. A dominant Pitta Dosha in a person is characterized with having excessive body heat, skin rashes, indigestion and the problems caused by heat.

Vata dosha:

This is the Dosha that represents the air and ether elements in a body. A person with the essential Vata balance is usually lean and energetic and enthusiastic about their way of living life and in their structure. The Vata Dosha is associated with the changes in the body, the movements of the body and the nervous system of the body; Usually cold and dry in their essence.

  • Kapha dosha:

This is a Dosha that represents the water and earth elements of the body. A person with an essential Kapha balance is usually loyal, calm, patient, thoughtful, with a strong built and a strong stamina. A dominance of this Dosha in a person is characterized by obesity, resistant to change, movements, excessive sleeping, and fluid retention.

Even with so many modern medical advancements, Ayurveda still is the most holistic way to cure so many kinds of ailments. Ayurveda withholds and looks after all the aspects and elements in a person’s structural being; and is known to correct the issues intrinsically and in detailed workings. This is why Ayurveda is still referred to time and again in the modern medical works.
