7 Tips for Keeping Your Pool Clean and Healthy
Having a swimming pool in your yard is highly beneficial. It can boost property ambiance and value. It also provides a space for relaxation and exercise, considering that swimming is an excellent way to burn calories and improve your health and well-being.
But for you to reap these benefits, you have to keep your pool clean and healthy at all times.
Routine pool maintenance in Dubai and across the world is crucial to ensure that it is always free of disease-causing pathogens, and its filters and other equipment are running efficiently.
Here are seven maintenance tips to keep your pool clean.
1. Skim and scrub the walls of the pool
Skimming the debris and leaves off the water’s surface must be done daily. Once the debris sinks, it becomes difficult to remove them. You can use a leaf or hand skimmer to remove unwanted items off your pool, including bugs and leaves.
Skimming also includes emptying the skimmer basket weekly. This device is installed on the side of your pool, and its primary function is to skim the pool’s surface before the debris sinks at the bottom. Open the panel of the skimmer, remove the basket, and throw the contents. You can spray the inside of the basket to help eradicate all stubborn materials.
Aside from skimming, scrubbing the pool’s walls is also important to prevent the build-up of algae and the growth of fungus. Luckily, you don’t have to do this pool maintenance tasks often. Instead, scrubbing can be done every other week. Regularly check for any growths, and scrub them immediately so pathogens won’t proliferate, keeping your pool clean and fresh.
2. Keep an eye on the water level
Your pool must maintain a certain level of water to ensure that the pump always runs at an optimum level. So you have to check the level of water regularly, especially during the swimming season when evaporation and normal wear and tear are at large.
It is good to check the water level as you clean the skimmer. Don’t let the water drop below its ideal level, or the pump will suffer. Each time the water is low, fill the pool up to safe levels.
If you are not using your pool, such as during winter, it is best to leave water instead of draining it completely. The weight of the water will counteract with the force that presses up from below.
3. Check pool chemistry
With the introduction of pool test strips and kits, checking pool chemistry became a lot easier today. Do this bi-weekly during summer and weekly in colder months.
Ideal pH level
The pool’s ideal pH level is 7.4 to create a safe and comfortable swimming experience. But it should be sustained at 7.2-7.8.
A low pH level indicates the need to add less chlorine to the water. But as it increases, the chlorine becomes less active. Thus, the water starts to leave the scummy deposits on the pool’s walls if the pH level becomes too high.
Controlling the water’s pH level requires using chlorine and other chemicals for pH control. Check the list of big construction companies in Dubai and around the world with expertise of pool maintenance, and ask them about the best products for controlling pH levels in your pool.
Other chemical levels to be considered
You have to test the water weekly. In addition to pH level, here are the four chemical levels that should be considered whenever you do this.
- Free chlorine – This is a sanitizer that keeps the water free of germs.
- Cyanuric acid – It safeguards the chlorine from sunlight and controls the needed chlorine level.
- Calcium hardness – Ideal level is 220-350, but it must be lower for pools that have vinyl siding.
- Total alkalinity – Ideal level is 60-120 to help maintain the proper pH level.
If all the chemicals are balanced, the water will look clear, leave no to little residue on your skin, and have no scent.
4. Monitor the pool’s structure
Aside from water and chlorine levels, it is vital to check the structure of your pool regularly. Keep an eye on these structural items.
When you notice a sign of a crack in your pool, fill it with clear silicon. Don’t let the water drift from the pool’s interior and under the deck through the cracks as this will weaken the walls.
Aside from cracks, corrosion or rust can also make the wall weak. So deal with them immediately.
5. Clean the filter
The pool filter removes impurities from the water, such as leaves, dirt, and other debris. Though there are three types of filters, namely sand, cartridge, and diatomaceous earth, each kind requires regular cleaning. You don’t want to get the filters very dirty because they will become inefficient at filtering your pool’s impurities.
Cleaning the pipes used by the filter system through backwashing must also be done monthly. Set the filter to backwash mode. Remove and clean the leaf basket. Then, switch on the pump and allow it to run until the waste pipe expels clear water.
Avoid switching the filter on and off too often because this can damage the filter’s mechanics. Instead, set the filter on a timer and run it for a minimum of six hours daily.
6. Shock the pool only when necessary
Shocking is done to get rid of the nitrates from the animal, bird, or human feces. It refers to extremely raising the chlorine levels to kill bacteria by diluting three to five times the usual amount of chemical sanitizer like chlorine with water. The mixture is then poured into the pool’s return line, allowing it to filter towards the pool and gradually fill the pool with water.
But this should only be done twice each season. If shocking is required, you have to do it a night when no one uses the pool, or no sunlight will degrade the effectiveness of the chlorine-based shock. Otherwise, use a chlorine-free shock.
7. Get your pool professionally serviced
Nothing beats the services of pool maintenance experts. Having your pool professionally serviced at least once a year is crucial to keeping your swimming pool free of damages and germs.
There are pool maintenance tasks that only experts can do. They have the right knowledge and skill to ensure that all parts of your pool are working efficiently. Also, they have the proper equipment to complete even the hardest pool maintenance jobs.
Whether you just bought a property for sale in Dubai with a pool, or have an existing pool in your yard, use these maintenance tips to ensure that your swimming space is always clean and safe. And if you don’t have enough time and effort to do so, don’t hesitate to ask for professional help.
